Sponsorship The
Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) Program has been sponsored
by the United States Department of the Army since its inception
in 1958, and additionally joined by the Departments of the Navy
and Air Force after 1995. This joint sponsorship and the cooperative
efforts of universities throughout the nation has resulted in the
annual participation of about 10,000 high school students (grades
9-12) and teachers at regional and national symposia. Forty-eight
regional symposia are held throughout the United States, Puerto
Rico, and in cooperation with the Department of Defense schools
in Europe and the Pacific. The annual National symposium concludes
the program year and brings together 240 high school students, their
teachers, faculty and scientists.
The
Academy of Applied Science, a non-profit educational organization
in Concord, New Hampshire, administers the National JSHS Program
in cooperation with universities or other educational institutions
such as Texas A&M University.
Program ObjectivesThe
primary aims of the Texas JSHS are to promote original research
and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics
at the high school level, and to publicly recognize students for
outstanding achievement. The Texas JSHS provides an opportunity
for Texas high school students to present the results of their original
research in a professional arena. Students who participate in the
symposia also have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, interact
with practicing researchers, and explore future academic and career
opportunities. The 2009 Texas JSHS Program will include research
paper presentations and poster sessions.
Nomination ProcessHigh
school teachers/adult sponsors are invited to nominate up to five students from
each school who have conducted original research in the sciences,
engineering and mathematics. No more than five nominations per
school will be accepted.
Students
are to submit an abstract of their original research prepared in
accordance with the guidelines. A panel of judges will select the
top eight abstracts in each category, and those students will be invited to give oral
presentations. All remaining nominations will be invited to present
their research in a competitive poster session.
ObserversIn
addition to the 5 nominations, we would like to extend an invitation
to all schools to bring ONE student observer (observers MUST
be new to the program), as space permits. This is intended to allow
students the opportunity to observe their peers during the competition.
Observers are expected to attend all TJSHS activities.
Schools
who would like to participate in this event as observers only may
nominate 5 students to attend as observers in anticipation of participating
in the future.

by the Symposium. Reserved parking will be available in the University
Center Parking Garage.
