Sponsorship  The Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) Program has been sponsored by the United States Department of the Army since its inception in 1958, and additionally joined by the Departments of the Navy and Air Force after 1995. This joint sponsorship and the cooperative efforts of universities throughout the nation has resulted in the annual participation of about 10,000 high school students (grades 9-12) and teachers at regional and national symposia. Forty-eight regional symposia are held throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and in cooperation with the Department of Defense schools in Europe and the Pacific. The annual National symposium concludes the program year and brings together 240 high school students, their teachers, faculty and scientists.

The Academy of Applied Science, a non-profit educational organization in Concord, New Hampshire, administers the National JSHS Program in cooperation with universities or other educational institutions such as Texas A&M University.

Program Objectives  The primary aims of the Texas JSHS are to promote original research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics at the high school level, and to publicly recognize students for outstanding achievement. The Texas JSHS provides an opportunity for Texas high school students to present the results of their original research in a professional arena. Students who participate in the symposia also have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, interact with practicing researchers, and explore future academic and career opportunities. The 2007 Texas JSHS Program will include research paper presentations and poster sessions.

Nomination Process  High school teachers/adult sponsors are invited to nominate up to four students from each school who have conducted original research in the sciences, engineering and mathematics. No more than four nominations per school will be accepted.

Students are to submit an abstract of their original research prepared in accordance with the guidelines. A panel of judges will select the top 18 abstracts, and those students will be invited to give oral presentations. All remaining nominations will be invited to present their research in a competitive poster session.

Observers  In addition to the 4 nominations, we would like to extend an invitation to all schools to bring ONE student observer (observers MUST be new to the program), as space permits. This is intended to allow students the opportunity to observe their peers during the competition. Observers are expected to attend all TJSHS activities.

Schools who would like to participate in this event as observers only may nominate 4 students to attend as observers in anticipation of participating in the future.

Travel and Accommodations  Transportation to and from Texas A&M University will not be provided nor paid for by the Symposium. Reserved parking will be available in the University Center Parking Garage.

Invited participants will be housed at a hotel to be announced in College Station. Presenters will room with other presenters. All room assignments will be made by our office and all participants will share a room with no more than four to a room, same gender. Sponsors will share a room with one other sponsor, same gender. Whenever possible, students will be housed with other students from the same school. Sponsors must specify if they want their own room and will be responsible for billing at single rate.

All meals from Thursday evening through Saturday breakfast will be provided on a scheduled basis. Presentation room assignments and meal information will be included in the packet received at time of registration. A non-refundable registration fee of $20.00 per person for presenters, sponsors and observers is the only cost to invited participants and is due upon receipt of "Intention to Participate" and Release Forms. This covers all meals, two nights lodging, scheduled sessions, and all taxes.

Regional Awards  The 1st place finalist of the research paper competition will receive a $2,000 undergraduate tuition-based scholarship; the 2nd place $1,500; and the 3rd place $1,000.  Additionally, 1st and 2nd place has the opportunity to compete for scholarships at the National JSHS. (3rd, 4th, and 5th place regional finalists will receive an expense-paid trip as observers to the National JSHS, scheduled for April/May 2007.

We encourage you to check the Texas JSHS website periodically for the latest information and any changes for the 2007 Texas JSHS.

* All students and sponsors invited to attend the Texas JSHS are expected to attend all symposium activities. We cannot cover the expenses of participants who do otherwise, unless prior approval is granted from the symposium director.

* All participants MUST be accompanied by their sponsor.

Educational Outreach and Women's Programs realizes that in any competition differences of opinion about the judges interpretations may occur. It is the policy of the Outreach Programs to support the interpretations and final decisions of the judges panel.
